Scleral Lenses

Vision Excellence provides advanced scleral lens fitting for patients with complex vision needs and ocular surface conditions. Scleral lenses are highly specialised contact lenses designed to vault over the cornea and rest on the white part of the eye (the sclera), creating a smooth optical surface and a protective fluid reservoir. This unique design can significantly improve vision, comfort, and eye health for patients who are unable to achieve good outcomes with conventional glasses or contact lenses.

Our principal optometrist, Lee Pepper, has many years of experience in the design and fitting of scleral lenses and is recognised for his expertise in managing complex and challenging cases. Lee has worked extensively with patients who have previously struggled with other forms of vision correction and regularly shares his knowledge and clinical experience with other practitioners. His careful, methodical approach ensures each scleral lens is individually designed to achieve the best possible visual and clinical outcome.

Scleral lenses are particularly beneficial for patients with conditions such as keratoconus, irregular corneas, post-corneal surgery (including corneal grafts and refractive surgery), corneal scarring, and severe dry eye disease. They can also provide excellent visual rehabilitation where conventional contact lenses are uncomfortable, unstable, or unable to provide clear vision.

At Vision Excellence, the scleral lens fitting process involves detailed clinical assessment, advanced corneal imaging, and precise customisation of lens parameters. Multiple measurements and evaluations are performed to ensure optimal fit, comfort, and long-term eye health. We take the time to guide patients through the process, including lens handling, care, and ongoing monitoring.

We work closely with ophthalmologists and other eye care professionals to provide coordinated care, particularly for patients with complex corneal or ocular surface conditions. This collaborative approach ensures that patients with “difficult” eyes receive the most appropriate and effective management.

Our goal is to provide clear, comfortable vision and improve quality of life for patients who may have previously been told that little could be done to help their vision. With modern scleral lens technology and experienced clinical care, excellent outcomes are often achievable.

If you have been told you have keratoconus, an irregular cornea, severe dry eye, or have been unable to tolerate conventional contact lenses, scleral lenses may provide an effective solution. Our team would be pleased to assess your suitability and discuss your options.
