Macular Degeneration Awareness Week

Macular Degeneration Awareness Week 2014

There are some key ways we can fight this disease.

The first step is to have an eye examination and macula check.

Secondly, do not ignore any changes in vision. Early detection can literally save your sight.

Contact us at Vision Excellence Castle Hill to book a Macular Health Screening appointment now.

Macular degeneration can only be diagnosed by examining the retina. This must be undertaken by an eye care professional.

Every adult should schedule regular check-ups but if you have any of the following symptoms, you should seek help immediately from an eye care professional:

  • Difficulty with reading or doing any other activity which requires fine vision
  • When looking at straight lines, they appear wavy, bent or distorted
  • Distinguishing faces or facial expressions is becoming difficult
  • Dark patches or empty spaces appear in the centre of your vision

The need for increased illumination, sensitivity to glare, decreased night vision and poor colour sensitivity may also indicate that there may be something wrong.
The early detection of any form of MD is crucial. MD can cause many different symptoms but in its early stages it may go unnoticed altogether. Symptoms should never be dismissed as part of just ‘getting older’. Detecting changes early allows steps to be taken to try and slow down the progression of macular degeneration.
The Amsler Grid is an important tool in detecting any changes in vision.
Vision Excellence Castle Hill supports the wonderful work of  the Macular Disease Foundation of Australia, their website is a wealth of information, share your story and read how other peoples lives are affected by MD.
